Description

Dark buff earthenware, moulded in relief, incised, and painted in green under lead-glaze. Mandorla-shaped, with a scrolled rectangular panel at the bottom, and two holes for suspension at the top. The crowned Virgin stands with her hands together surrounded by fourteen cherubs'heads with wings. The panel below is incised with the letters 'R.M.C.'

Note

According to Reggi, see Documentation, this Assumption was inspired by a wood sculpture of 1514 by Gaspare Cibelli in the Duomo at Carpi. Another possible source was a bronze plaquette attributed to a Master Alivse, which mayh have inspired maiolica panels made in the eighteenth century at Imola.
