Description

Eight earthenware fragments, with and without cream slips, all lightly incised on the interior under a yellow glaze and some enhanced with green and brown pigments

Wheel-thrown earthenware bowl fragments with reddish body tones, with and without cream slips, all lightly incised on the interior under a yellow glaze and some enhanced with green and brown pigments
A:
Shape: Part of base, foot ring, and lower body of a large carinated bowl with almost straight sides
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, a double incised line circling the base enclosing lightly incised curved spokes radiating from a central point bearing a dot of dark brown pigment, the lower body decorated with similar lines radiating upwards from the base and curving over in lobes, enhanced with painted lines of green and dark brown pigments
Exterior: thin layer of pinkish slip, undecorated, with two splashes of yellow glaze
B:
Shape: fragment of vessel wall, curving outward at upper edge, possibly upper body with part of rim
Interior: yellow glaze over cream slip, with lightly incised double lines drawn vertically and curving slightly, enhanced with painted lines of green and dark brown pigments normally corresponding to the incised lines
Exterior: undecorated, thin layer of pinkish slip in places, one area of splashed yellow glaze.
C:
Shape: fragment of rim and upper body of a thin-walled carinated vessel
Interior: yellow glaze over cream slip, a band of very lightly incised lines decorating the surface, enhanced with painted vertical lines of green and dark brown pigment
Exterior:
Lightly coated in a pinkish slip, undecorated
D:
Shape: thin-walled rim fragment
Interior: yellow glaze over cream slip, with double-incised lines, some straight and some scrolling, enhanced with painted lines of green and brown pigment
Exterior: the rim edge glazed in brown above a slight collar, otherwise unglazed and undecorated, covered in a pinkish slip
E:
Shape: part of base and lower body of a carinated, straight-sided cup standing on a flared foot ring
Interior: a decoration of curved spokes radiating from the centre of the base is enclosed by an incised double line, above which is visible the bottom part of an indistinct group of incised abstract designs separated by groups of vertical lines at intervals
Exterior: over a pinkish slip, a yellow glaze, hardly apparent above the carination, some splashes under the foot ring, undecorated
F:
Shape: part of rim and upper body of a straight sided vessel
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, undecorated except for a vertical double line incised at one edge, enhanced by a parallel painted line of brown pigment, the rim edged in the same brown pigment
Exterior: covered in a pinkish slip and unglazed apart from where yellow glaze has run over from the interior.
G:
Shape: part of rim and upper body of a carinated vessel with gently rounded walls
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, lightly incised with a double line radiating at an angle from the base, along with other vertical double line, enhanced with painted lines of green pigment over the sgrafitto, the triangular space between the lines filled with lightly incised scrolling lines
Exterior: covered with a pinkish slip, unglazed except for below the carination and at the rim
H:
Shape: base and lower body of a rounded bowl, standing on a short foot ring
Interior: Lightly incised scrolling double lines form an irregular abstract design, over a ground of densely scribbled spirals
Exterior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, undecorated
