Description

Four earthenware fragments, all with a cream slip incised and enhanced with dark and light brown underglaze pigments, under a yellow glaze

Wheel-thrown earthenware bowl fragments with reddish body tones, coated with cream slip, incised, and enhanced with dark and light brown underglaze pigments under a yellow glaze
A:
Shape: fragment of a small hemispherical cup, standing on a low straight-sided foot ring
Interior: thin yellow glaze over a cream slip, part of an incised design (possibly a blazon) on the base is surrounded by a border of thicker slip creating a relief effect and paler colour under the glaze, and enclosed by an incised band similarly enhanced, the spaces between decorated with a dark brown pigment, the upper body undecorated but for a line of brown pigment around the rim.
Exterior: uneven yellow glaze over a thin layer of cream slip, with splashes of green and brown pigments also present
B:
Shape: fragment of a rim and upper body of a vessel with rounded sides
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, with two incised lines and a scalloped decorative band running under the rim, enhanced with extra slip creating a paler tone under the glaze
Exterior: Yellow glaze over a cream slip, undecorated
C:
Shape: fragment of slightly inverted rim and upper body with gently rounded sides
Interior: below double incised lines running under the rim, the upper body is covered in the top part of incised calligraphy with circles between the uprights, infilled with dark brown pigment, and an area of curving incised lines and a patch of brown pigment to one side
Exterior: yellow slip over a cream glaze, undecorated but for a splash of brown pigment towards the lower body and a faint splash of green at the rim
D:
Shape: fragment of a vessel with rounded walls
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, a small area of incised lettering and incised circles are visible, both enhanced with extra slip creating a paler tone
Exterior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, undecorated
