Earthenware, decorated with coloured glazes

Earthenware, moulded, with applied moulded decoration, and coloured lead-glazes. Oval with a deep centre on which are arranged a viper, lizard, oak- and vine-leaves, fronds of spleenwort, and shells in relief, coloured blue, green, and manganese-purple; the ground, and the back of the dish mottled with blue and purple

History note: Sir Andrew Fountaine Collection; sold, Christie's, 16-19 June 1884, Catalogue of the celebrated Fountaine collec¬tion of majolika, Henry II ware, Palissy ware, Nevers ware, Limoges enamels . . ., removed from Narford Hall, Norfolk, 2nd day, 17 June1884, lot 253; bought by Wareham for 116 guineas; Rev. Thomas Staniforth (1807-87); sold Christie's, 2 May 1889, Staniforth Collection, lot ?; bought by Durlacher for 52 guineas; sold to Charles Ricketts by whom sent to the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Sydney Cockerell in 1917; seen by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher FRS, on 23 February 1917 and taken to his rooms at Trinity College; purchased from Charles Ricketts for £60 on 9 March 1917 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
