Description

Earthenware, incised, and decorated with slip under lead-glaze: the Annuncation surrounded by a border of a hunting scene

Orange-red earthenware, the upper surface painted in white slip with details incised through it, and touched in places with green and manganese-purple pigment under a clear lead-glaze. Circular with a wide rim and deep curved well. In the middle within two sets of narrow concentric circles, the Annunciation is taking place under a canopy supported by baluster columns, with the initials CM/15 to the left of Gabriel, and SM/90 to the right of the Virgin. Round the rim, is a continuous hunting scene with huntsmen on horseback and on foot, hounds, deer, a hare, and a boar amongst trees. Round the outer edge is a border of short white strokes.
