Description

Concave earthenware plate, press-moulded, coated in cream slip and slip-trailed in two shades of brown under lead glaze. Decorated with a medallion enclosing alLion passant, rosettes and the initials IS (back to front) in high relief, surrounded by crude kite-shaped faces and an outer border of dark brown spots

Buff earthenware, press-moulded over a hump mould to produce a design in high relief on the interior, and scalloped round the edge with a striated tool, coated inside with cream slip, and slip-trailed in brown and dark brown under yellowish lead-glaze; the exterior is undecorated. Two suspension holes were made through the border at the top before firing. In the middle is a circular frame enclosing a lion passant, two rosettes, a figure-of eight motif, and the initials IS (S reversed) under the lion. This is surrounded by a circle of twenty-four crude kite-shaped faces with trailed dots representing the eyes and mouth, above which are twenty-four brown spots and a border of closely spaced dark brown spots.
