Description

Three-legged slipware sugar bowl and cover with a handle comprising eight pale yellow and green volutes, radiating from a bird perching behind three vertical leaves

Red earthenware, thrown, with three applied feet, and relief decoration, coated with white slip on the interior of the bowl and underside of the cover, and painted in pale yellow, green, and white under lead glaze. The bulbous bowl curves outwards towards its rim, and has three hoof feet. The sides are decorated in relief with three ring handles alternating with three double S scrolls entwined with leaves. The cover is domed with a narrow border, and internal flange. On its top it has eight volutes, radiating from a bird perching behind three vertical leaves. The brown areas on the outside are spotted in white slip and the relief decoration is picked out in white, green, and ochre. The volutes of the ornamental handle are painted alternately pale yellow and green.
