Description

Renaissance maiolica dish, painted in polychrome with a putto in the middle, surrounded by concentric circles, radiating petals, leaves and bands.

Dish. Earthenware. The front is coated with cream slip (or tin glaze?) and covered with a bubbly lead glaze; the reverse is incised with concentric circles and is unglazed except for dribbles over the thin coating of slip near the rim. Painted underglaze in blue, green, yellow, and orange.
Shape 67. Circular with deep sloping sides, curving outwards at the rim, standing on a footring pierced by two correctly placed suspension holes.
In the middle, a putto runs towards the right, surrounded by blue and yellow concentric circles and eight radiating petals. Pointing inwards from the rim are eight pairs of orange and yellow leaves with a bud between each pair, separated by groups of three green leaves. Round the rim are two blue bands and a wide yellow band.
