Description

Red earthenware, with marbled decoration on the exterior, slip-coating inside the bowl and cover, and incised and painted decoration under lead-glaze

Red earthenware thrown, with applied moulded horizontal lugs and knob, decorated with slip, and incised decoration under lead-glaze. The bowl has deep curved sides with a projecting band below the lugs, and stands on a footring. The domed cover has a narrow border, with an internal flange which fits inside the top of the bowl. The central knob is mushroom-shaped with a slight hump in the middle. The exterior of both parts is marbled with white and brown slip, and green, except for the base. The inside of the bowl is coated with white slip, and has an incised plant in the base painted in reddish-brown, green, and yellow, and has the date '1783' incised below, under lead-glaze. Round the rim there are five bands of chattering or rouletted points over which are painted a green band, and two horizontal yellow lines level with the lugs on the exterior. The underside of the cover is coated in white slip and incised in the middle with a flower and leaf painted in reddish-brown, green, yellow and manganese-purple under lead-glaze.The interior and exterior of the flange and border have bands of chattering or rouletting, over which are yellow and green bands.
