Earthenware, with incised, applied decoration coated in a brown glaze tinged with green in discrete areas
Earthenware, mould made, with applied decoration, in places incised, coated in a slightly pitted brown glaze tinged with green, particularly on the face.
Shape: hollow horse figurine, with applied decoration comprising a facial features, tail, saddle, reins and bridle; the mane, rosettes and leaves are incised. A circular spout is present on the rear haunches and the mouth is slightly open, both indicative of the use of this object as a pouring vessel.
Exterior: applied rosettes are present either side of the rear spout, as well as on the chest and shoulders where they are adorned with three radial leaves. The saddle comprises a large rectangular section of clay and rolled cylindrical strips for the pommels, reins, straps and bridle. A splash of yellow over-glaze paint is present on the applied tail. Glaze terminates unevenly on the lower legs or feet.
Interior: unglazed
History note: A sale in Chester; G.H. Fennah (?), Chester; seen there on 26 October 1911, and bought on 27 October for £4.10s.0d. after his return to Cambridge, by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge. It arrive in Cambridge on 2 November 1911.
