Earthenware fragment, incised through a cream slip under a yellow glaze
Long Description: Wheel-thrown earthenware vessel fragment with dark body tone, coated with cream slip and incised under a yellow glaze
Shape: fragment of upper body of a straight sided vessel, with a slight outwards carination near the top
Interior: yellow glaze over a cream slip, the body over-fired, or fired in a low-oxygen environment (reduction kiln) with the result that the originally reddish fabric turned a dark grey and the cream slip turned a light grey. On the surface, a wide band of calligraphy is enhanced with circles between the uprights, and framed by incised lines and below by a narrow scalloped decorative band
