Soft-paste porcelain stand for a mustard pot, decorated with an underglaze blue ground, two reserves painted in enamels with a bird in a landscape, and gilding,
Soft-paste porcelain, moulded, and decorated with an underglaze blue ground (bleu lapis), painting in blue, pale turquoise-green, yellowish and brownish green, puce pink, grey, brown, and black enamels, and gilding. Oval with notched and curved edges and concave curving slightly lobed sides. There is a suspension hole in the footring. The stand has a bleu lapis ground with a shaped reserve at each end, surrounded by an elaborate rococo frame composed of gilt scrolls, flowers and foliage. The reserve is painted with an exotic bird standing on the ground in a landscape with a low tree on the right. There is a dentilated gilt band round the rim.

Production date:

AD 1760
: Accessioned as 1759 but as a result of the revision of the dates for the date letters, A now standing for 1754, it has been changed to 1760.
Both Grémont and Poulain were working at the factory when this stand was made, and have been suggested as the user of the incised mark gp, but given the initials the latter seems more likely.
The painter's mark on this piece appears on objects decorated with birds made c. 1759, and is somewhat like another arrow mark which since the 19th century has been attributed to Pierre-François Yvernel, who worked at the factory from 1750-59. But no evidence has been found for this attribution. On accession this dish was attributed to Yvernel, but if Peters' proposed revision of the years allocated to date letters is accepted, this dish would have been decorated in 1760 after he had left the factory (see Documentation, Peters, 2014).
This is one of two different stand forms which accompanied barrel-shaped mustard pots (moutardiers ordinaires), the other has a cusped rather than indented outline, and a central depression to take the pot. This stand and its pair may have been intended to accompany a pair of similarly decorated mustard pots decorated by the same two decorators and said to have come from Strawberry Hill formerly in the Charles-Otto Zieseniss Collection (see Documentation).
