Buff stoneware, thrown, with applied handle, applied moulded relief decoration painted in blue and manganese-purple, and salt-glaze; pewter mounts, thumbpiece and cover. The cylindrical tankard has a loop handle with a curl of clay below its lower end. It has applied top and lower borders of repeating lozenge diamonds in high relief, painted blue. Above the upper border there is a blue horizontal band, and below the lower border another. On the main field there are three rectangular panels with rounded corners each bearing the same two tier design of a mask and wings flanked by two towers with spires, over a winged cherub's head flanked by boats. In the upper part of each panel are the initials W B on either side of the winged mask, on the left between the towers LUV, and on the right between the towers, D E N. Above and below are borders of U-shapes painted in manganese-purple. The rim and lower edge have a plain pewter mount. A pewter mount and hinge at the top of the handle are attached to a oval ball thumbpiece with a small knob on top, and a flat-topped cover with gadrooned sides and an eight-pointed star in the middle on which is engaved ' */ IHS / 1772'.
