Pale grey salt-glazed stoneware decorated with applied moulded reliefs of the arms of Charles, Landgrave of Hesse, and half-length portraits of Queen Mary II, reserved in a manganese-purple ground ; pewter thumbpiece and cover

Pale grey stoneware, decorated with applied moulded reliefs reliefs reserved in a manganese-purple ground, and salt-glazed; pewter thumbpiece and cover. The cylindrical tankard has a turned band at the top and bottom of the sides, and a loop handle of shallow D-section. On the front are the arms of Charles, Landgrave of Hesse (1663-1730) enclosed by an oval band inscribed 'CAROLVS. D. G. LANDGR. HAESSI. PR HERSF. COM. CATT.D.Z.N. & SCHAWENB (Landgrave of Hesse, Prince of Hirschfeld, Count of KIatzenelnbogen, Diez, Ziegenhain, Nidda and Schaumberg). On either side repeated, is an oval medallion with a half-length portrait of Queen Mary II of England, enclosed by the legend, 'MARIA. D. G. MAG. BRIT. FRANC. ET HIB. REGINA. &'. Attached to the top of the handle is a hinged mount attached to the shallow flat-topped cover and fluted ball thumbpiece.
