Production: Unidentified Westerwald pottery
Grey stoneware, thrown, with diaper carved ornament (kerbschnitt) and applied reliefs, painted with cobalt-blue before salt-glazing; pewter mount and cover. The jug has a globular body standing on a thick disk base, a narrow cylindrical neck with a projecting band above the decoration, and a loop handle to the top of which is attached the mount for the hinged thumbpiece and domed cover with an acorn finial. The body is decorated overall with chip-carving and the neck is applied with a human mask, a winged monster and foliage, and oval relief (not distinguishable), and another winged monster and foliage. The reliefs are picked out in cobalt blue and there are horizontal blue bands above and below them. On the bulbus area are the initials 'I.K' and the date '1607' with a cross between each digit in cobalt-blue.
