Brown salt-glazed stoneware with cut and relief decoration painted in polychrome enamels; pewter mounts and cover with embossed floral decoration and the inscription: 'ANNA REGINA LVFFTNEGGERIN: MELCHIOR HINTERMAYER ANNO 1665'

Brown stoneware, with kerbschnitt (cut) and moulded relief decoration, and dark brown wash under salt-glaze, painted overglaze in blue, yellow, red and white enamel, and gilded. Pewter mounts and cover with embossed decoration and engraved inscription. The tankard is of squat cylindrical form with strap handle. The middle of the side is decorated with a band of gilded kerbschnitt decoration flanked by red, white and blue slanting lines. Above and below it are bands of foliate cresting in relief painted in all the enamel colours, with yellow horizontal bands above and below. There is a pewter mount round the foot, and rim, and a hinged mount on the handle attached to the thumbpiece and domed cover which is embossed with flowers and foliage. Around its lower edge are engraved the names and date: 'ANNA REGINA LVFFTNEGGERIN: MELCHIOR HINTERMAYER ANNO 1665'.
