Description

Earthenware, painted in blue, green and yellow under a white glaze

Earthenware, wheel thrown, painted in blue, green and yellow under a white glaze

Shape: inverted pear-shaped body with plain rim, sitting on a low foot ring.
Domed lid with oval, knob handle and a lipped rim.

Body:
Exterior: the rim is painted with a green line. On neck two narrow friezes comprise an upper band of alternating blue, yellow, green and black vertical lines, regularly framed with dashed scallops; and a lower register of green and yellow rosettes, surrounded by scrolling vines bearing dotted blue and green trefoil leaves. On the body, narrow bands of blue and yellow diamonds, defined by concentric lines of green, yellow and blue, define two friezes. On the upper frieze yellow archways enclose a green palmette tree framed by curving stems of blue leaves and two yellow irregular shapes, possibly hillocks. The lower frieze incorporates blue or yellow diamonds enclosed within medallions reserved in green or yellow. On the lower body a final frieze of blue, yellow and green pendants, with both triangular and scalloped edges are arranged in alternating directions. The triangular pendants on the upper register contain palmette leaves. Scars on the body indicate signs of spalling on the body, where impurities in the clay have exploded.
Interior: undecorated except for white glaze.

Lid:
Exterior: on the body, framed by a green band with scalloped edge, yellow and blue petals and blue dotted lines radiate from a green handle. At the mid point blue and yellow scallops are painted above blue and yellow diamonds, framing a band of blue, yellow, green and black vertical lines, regularly framed with dashed scallops, as on the upper body of the main body. Scars on the surface indicate that this must have been in contact with other objects in the kiln.
Interior: undecorated except for white glaze.
