Renaissance maiolica dish, painted in polychrome with God creating Adam.
Dish. Earthenware, tin-glazed overall; the glaze on the reverse thinly applied and tinged with green in four places; three spur marks on the front of the rim. Painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, black, and white.
Shape 59. Circular with sloping rim and deep well, standing on a footring.
God creating Adam. God, wearing a crown, a long gown and a billowing cloak, stands on the right holding out his right arm towards Adam who lies on the ground on the left. In the landscape background there is grass and a rock, a stony path, an elephant beside three small trees, a large tree in the centre, and distant mountains. In the sky on the left there is the sun and six birds and, on the right, the moon and two birds. The edge is yellow. On the back, a blue band encircles the edge.

The source of the design on the dish was the woodcut by Bernard Salomon, captioned `GENES I' in Damiano Maraffi's Figure del Vecchio Testamento con versi toscani, Lyon (Jean de Tournes), 1554.
