Description
Slipware dish decorated in the middle with a standing man pointing towards a king, and on the rim with alternating male heads and buds on stalks
Pale red earthenware, thrown, coated on the front with white slip, decorated with slip-trailing in brown, dark brown and white slip, and lead-glazed; the reverse is undecorated. Circular with a broad, concave, and severely warped rim, deep curved sides and flat central area. In the middle on the left, a standing man, wearing a long coat and a sash, is pointing with his left hand towards a crowned king standing beside him, wearing a long coat and ermine-trimmed robe (not visible). The spaces on the right and left of the figures are each occupied by a long leaf with a wavy edge. Above, to the right of the king's head is a small cherub blowing a trumpet, and on the left of his head, another, smaller without a trumpet. The rim is decorated with eighteen male heads alternating with eighteen buds on stalks.

Note
The figures in the middle seems to represent an official or nobleman acknowledging the coronation of a king. The details of the slip-trailing of the figure of the king are very close to a king on a dish in Sheffield Museum, which is dated 1689 and therefore represents William III, but the king on the Fitzwilliam's dish might have represented James II who was crowned in 1685. The potter may have been William Talor, who signed a dish with comparable figures, cherubs and leaves in the middle, but a trailed trellis border, in the Burnap Collection in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City.
