Description

Fritware decorated with slip, painted in black with a turquoise glaze

Buff fritware, wheel thrown, relief decoration created with slip, painted in black and blue under a transparent turquoise glaze.
Shape: hemispherical bowl with plain rim, sits on a narrow foot ring
Interior: rim is painted with a dentilated pattern in black and blue. On the body a bird, possibly a bustard, flies amongst lotus type flowers and trefoil leaves, all outlined in black and dotted with black or blue. These leaves and flowers are also defined using slip to create a raised surface.
Exterior: black lines radiate from the base towards a pair of concentric lines just below the rim, creating a stylised lotus petal design. The glaze runs over the vessel surface ending on the lower body.
