Label text from the exhibition ‘Things of Beauty Growing: British Studio Pottery’ on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 20 March until 17 June 2018: With Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie and Denise Wren, Norah Braden was one of the pioneer women studio potters. She studied at the Royal College of Art before being sent by to work at the Leach pottery from 1925, with a letter sent from the Royal College stating, ‘I am sending you a genius.’ Her output of works was small, not least because her perfectionism drove her to destroy much of her work. She later worked with Pleydell-Bouverie at her pottery in Coleshill for eight years (1928-36) before turning to teaching and giving up making completely in the 1950s. All three of these bowls were made during her time at Coleshill and reveal echoes of Chinese forms but also relate to modernist ideals of minimal decoration and remaining true to the materials used.
