Description

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed except for the base and mouth, and painted in blue. Oviform, with short recurved neck.The entire surface is covered with pseudo-Chinese figures in pairs, some of them carrying parasols, banners or large branches of flowers, amongst groups of buildings, trees and floral sprays.

History note: Professor Henry Melville Gwatkin (1844-1916), Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History 1891-1916; his widow, who said that she ‘believed it had been dug up with a bellarmine in London’; sold by her to Stanley Woolston of Cambridge who sold it for £2.10s.0d. on 10 February 1917 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Note

When accessioned, the jar was attributed to Savona, in Liguria in northern Italy, but comparable decoration derived from Ming Transitional style Chinese porcelain is found on English delftware jars of this form.
