Maiolica pharmacy jar, painted in blue, yellow, and orange, with a three-quarter length figure of Justice, surrounded by decorative panels.
Earthenware, tin-glazed on the interior and exterior; base unglazed. The glaze has pin holes, especially on the areas painted yellow. Painted in blue, yellow, and orange.
Waisted albarello with concave base, and throwing ridges on the interior.
On the front above two sprays of leaves is a shield charged with a three-quarter length figure of Justice, surmounted by a helmet flanked by scrolls and looped cords. The sides are decorated with vertical panels filled with stylised flowers and foliage between vertical wavy orange, straight yellow and blue lines. On the shoulder and above the base are blue slanting Ss between pairs of narrow blue bands.
History note: Lucy Joan Scott-Ellis (1808-99), Countess Howard de Walden; Thomas Sutton, Eastbourne, from whom purchased in February 1900 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher.

This jar was formerly attributed to Castelli (Rackham, 1935), but the shape of its top and the slanting, overlapping S border closely resemble albarelli attributed to Laterza.
