Maker: Unidentified Ariano Irpino pottery
Maiolica puzzle jug, painted in green, yellow, orange, and black with an eagle enlcosed in a frame, surrounded by flowers and leaves.
Pale buff earthenware, tin-glazed except for the base. Painted in green, yellow, orange, and brownish-black.
Barrel-shaped, with disk base, a cylindrical neck expanding towards the rim, and a loop handle enclosing a tube which runs round both sides of the rim and emerges as a sucking spout at the front. The neck is pierced by rows of circular and triangular holes. The front is decorated in relief with an applied circular frame enclosing an eagle displayed, and there are applied sprays of flowers and leaves on the neck.
The circular frame is yellow with slanting orange and brown strokes over it and the eagle, and the floral sprays are picked out in all four colours. The rest of the body is decorated with black dotted circles filled in with either green, yellow, or orange. Round the neck is a broad green band with an orange band above and below, and on the rim are yellow and green bands. Inside the neck are green and yellow areas striped in brown and orange. Down the outside of the handle are alternating brown ovals and chevrons on a yellow ground, flanked by black diagonal strokes over orange and green vertical stripes.
