Description

Maiolica plate, painted in polychrome, with a Cupid holding a drum and horn, surrounded by radiating grotesques.

Plate. Earthenware, tin-glazed overall. Painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown.
Approximately 59. Circular with gently sloping rim and shallow curved well, with recessed base.
In the middle, a Cupid holding a drum and horn stands in a landscape encircled by a yellow and orange petal border, surrounded by radiating grotesques edged by yellow and orange simulated beading. On the rim there are four pseudo-gems and grotesques. The edge is encircled by two narrow orange bands, and a yellow band with pairs of orange strokes and blue and white spots on it. The back is encircled by yellow bands: one round the foot, two at the shoulder, and two by the outer edge.

History note: Dr Alfred Pringsheim; Sotheby's, 20 July 1939, Catalogue of the renowned collection of Italian majolica, the property of Dr Alfred Pringsheim of Munich, second part of lot 377; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
