Tin-glazed earthenware sugar caster with pierced screw top, painted in red and blue with bands of formal plant motifs and panels of trellis pattern
Earthenware, with pierced screw top, tin-glazed overall, except for the screw areas on the body and cover, and painted in red and blue. The baluster-form caster stands on a depressed bell-shaped foot, and has a high domed cover pierced with four floral motifs formed by holes of different shapes, and by three bands of round and D-shaped holes radiating from the finial. Between the floral motifs there are painted plants, and the spaces between the other holes are filled by blue spots and tiny red asterisks, ladders and crossed tools or flags. Round the lower edge there is a border of half flowers and a blue band. The body of the caster is decorated at the top with a blue band and a border of formal flower heads and panels of trellis pattern, which is repeated below the shoulder. Between these, on the neck, there are pairs of leaves and buds alternating with small flower heads, repeated on the lower part of the body. The foot has four blue bands on and below its junction with the body, a row of lappets, and round the edge, a border comprising a row of red criss-crosses, a blue band, and a circle of half flower heads. In the centre of the underside, painted in blue is a capital O.
