Description

Dark buff earthenware, decorated with white and brown slips, and coated with yellowish lead glaze, except for the edge of the base and its underside. The globular pot has a slightly everted circular mouth at the top, and stands on circular disk base which is convex underneath. A small strap handle with a median vertical ridge is attached on one side of the upper part. the decoration is divided into an upper and lower part by a white horizontal band flanked by two brown. Above these there is a pattern repeated four times comprising a large cream circle with a brown centre and brown borders dotted in white, separated by a group of four smaller circles without the dots, with white spots four spots in the centre of the group. Below the horizontal bands there are two rows of slanting white strokes edged in brown, with below, a white horizontal band flanked by brown.

History note: Collection of Louis Marc Emmanuel Solon (1835-1913) ; sold by Charles Butters, Hanley 26-28 November 1912, first day, lot 14, illustrated pl. VI; bought for £6 by Mr. F J Morrell of 48 Liverpool Road, Stoke on Trent; sold by him, on 17 February 1913 for £14 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
