The Entombment of Christ
Painter: Rombaldoni, Ippolito
Maiolica dish on low foot, painted in polychrome with The Entombment of Christ.
Earthenware, tin-glazed overall; the reverse yellowish-cream, thinly and unevenly applied with trickles running across the surface. There is a fault on the front near the lower edge. Painted in blue, yellowish-green, yellow, orange, manganese-purple, and brown.
Shape approximately 77. Circular with shallow curved sides, standing on a low foot.
The Entombment of Christ. Mary Magdalene, the Virgin, Joseph of Arimathea and St John (?) are lowering the body of Christ into the tomb. Behind them a man holds up a lantern, and in the background are a tree, a hill and sky. The centre of the back is inscribed in brownish-orange with the cursive monogram HR.

The painter Ippolito Rombaldoni (1619-79) of Urbania, previously known as Castel Durante, signed his name Hippolito or Hipolito Romabladoni, and signed HR or IR. His dated works were made between 1670 and 1678.
