Description

Maiolica plate, painted in dark blue and white with a bust of a bearded man in profile to right.

Earthenware, tin-glazed greyish-blue overall. Painted in darker blue and white.
Circular with narrow sloping rim, curved well and recessed base.
A bust of a bearded man in profile to right, wearing a ruff and a doublet with three buttons. The background is shaded in blue, and close to the rim there is a faint blue band. On the back, interlacing petals outlined in blue radiate from the base.

History note: Sotheby's, 23 March 1926, Egyptian, Greek, Roman & Cypriote antiquities etc., lot 37; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
