In 1935 Rackham attributed this dish to Hesdin in northern France, but in 1977 P. Tichelaar of Makkum considered that it came from Friesland in the Netherlands, possibly from Makkum. Comparable deep dishes have more recently been attributed to Harlingen, see Documentation.
The woman probably represents the Sense of Smell if the objects in her hand are interpreted as flowers. Deep dishes and bowls are decorated with comparable women holding a drinking glass for Taste and a bird for Touch are in the Harlingen Museum.
