Note

French or Italian. One of a pair representing Antinous in the form of Osiris. In 130 BC Hadrian’s young lover, Antinous, drowned in the Nile. In death he became Osiris-Antinous and was worshipped as the Dead Antinous. His cult statues showed a youth in the guise of an Egyptian king, wearing a nemes headcloth, sometimes with the royal or divine uraeus, and wearing an Egyptian kilt. This pottery figure and its pair were derived from two Roman originals in the Vatican Museum
