Paris as a Shepherd

Renaissance maiolica shallow bowl, painted in polychrome with Paris as a Shepherd.
Shallow bowl. Earthenware, tin-glazed cream overall; the reverse speckled. Painted in blue, yellowish-green, yellow, dark yellow, orange, manganese-purple, and black.
Shape approximately 76. Circular with curved sides, slightly concave in the centre, and recessed underneath.
Paris as a Shepherd, wearing a purple Phrygian cap, a yellow tunic and boots, sits on a rock, holding the two halves of a broken bow. In the landscape background there is a tall rock and a distant mountain against a sunset sky. A blue band and a wider yellow band encircle the outer edge. On the back there are two yellow bands round the edge and one round the base.
History note: Kerin, London, from whom purchased in March 1918 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
