Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. Cylindrical with a short neck, rounded shoulders, and straight sides with a slight bulge and contraction just above the base. The front is decorated with a cartouche enclosing the name of the drug: 'C/FL:Calendul' (Confection of Marigold Flowers), and enclosed by a baroque frame comprising scrollwork with dangling tassels on each side, a basket of fruit and flowers between two peacocks at the top, and at the bottom, a winged cherub's head flanked by swags of fruit.

The Porcelain Dish Factory (De Porceleyne Schotel) operated between 1598 and 1791. The mark indicates that the jar was made during the directorship of Johannes van Duijn, 1764-72, or his widow 1772-3
