Note

James Neale (c. 1739/40-1814), an earthenware dealer in London since the 1760s, took over Humphrey Palmer's factory in High Street, Hanley in 1778, and from at least 1781 traded as James Neale & Co. Neale appointed a manager, Robert Wilson, and returned to London. The firm produced very well-modelled and painted figures, such as the set of Seasons to which this model belongs. Their appearance is much closer to that of porcelain figures than most Staffordshire earthenware figures.
