Description

Soft-paste porcelain basin, with a yellow ground, painted in enamels with, in reserve, three birds amongst flowers and a branch, and gilded.

Soft-paste porcelain decorated with a pale yellow ground, painting in blue, shades of green, yellow dark pink, puce, purple, and brown, and grey enamels, and gilding. Oval with deep sides and lobed and indented rim. There are two holes in the footring at right angles to each other. Yellow (jaune jonquille) ground with an oval reserve in the centre, framed by a wide band of gilding tooled with striated triangles, and painted in polychrome with two colourful exotic birds standing on the ground, and another perching in a tree beside them, with trees and flowers in the background. There is a band of gilding round the rim.

Note

The authenticity of this piece has been doubted by a number of Sèvres scholars and collectors. If made in the factory its decoration was probably done elsewhere, possibly in England. The painter's mark presumably added at the same time is that of Etienne Evans, who specialized in bird painting

The tooling on the frame round the reserve is approximately the same as Savill's design no. 40 (See Savill, 1988, III, p. 1140).
