Bone china spill vase, bat-printed in black and gilt.

Bone china, spill vase, bat-printed in black and gilt. Cylindrical with wider base. On one side, a view of the Museum, inscribed below 'The Fitzwilliam Museum'. Gilt band on rim, on the side below the inscription and on the edge of the foot.

Note

The Fitzwilliam Museum was built between 1837 and 1847, when it opened to the public. It seems likely that the spill vase would have been produced shortly after that. It was tentatively attributed to Copeland when accessioned, but this is not now considered likely, although it was probably made in Staffordshire.
