Description

Maiolica dish, painted in polychrome with a shell fountain and a bust, with trees.

Earthenware, tin-glazed overall; crazed on the back. There are three spur marks on the rim. Painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, orange, manganese-purple, and grey. Six-sided with shaped edge, sloping, lightly fluted sides and flat centre.In the middle is an asymmetrical rocaille cartouche enclosing a shell fountain and a bust, with trees on either side of it.

History note: Purchased from Mossel in June 1918 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
