Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, red, and gold with two arched panels containing a figure of Charity and two panels containing Oriental flowering plants
Tin-glazed earthenware painted inglaze in blue, and overglaze in green, red, and gold. Rectangular with recessed base, straight sides, flat shoulders and a shallow cylindrical neck to take a screw top (missing and replaced in wood). The two long sides are each decorated with an arched panel enclosing a woman with three children, symbolizing Charity, standing on a chequered tile floor. The spandrels above the arches are blue with gold trianges and rows of dots at the top. The short ends are each decorated with a panel with a shaped top enclosing Oriental flowering plants. The area above is blue with gold scrolls and pendant bell-flowers. The blue neck is surrounded by a wide blue band and a narrower red band from which a half flower and scrolls in red and gold project onto the shoulder on each side.

This style of decoration was inspired by Japanese porcelain with an underglaze blue ground and painting in enamels and gold which was imported by the Dutch East India Company. Here the Oriental flower panels were combined with a European figure of Charity.
