Description

Lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels. Autumn represented as a girl holding a basket of fruit.

Cream earthenware, moulded, covered with very slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze, and painted in blue, turquoise, green, yellow, orange, flesh pink, dark puce, purple, red, yellowish-brown, and black enamels. The closed underside has a circular ventilation hole in the middle. The figure is supported by a square base with straight sides, a moulded top edge, with a dark puce line running round the top. Autumn is represented by a fair-haired girl with rosy cheeks standing in front of a grassy mound with rococo-style scrolls picked out in puce and turquoise-green at the front and viewer's left side. She steps up onto the mound with her right leg, which is bent, and has her left leg straight with the foot on the ground. She holds a basket of fruit in her right arm and holds a piece of fruit in her right hand which rests on her breast. She wears a white broad-brimmed hat with a blue hat-band and edge, a white blouse, an orange bodice, a white apron, and a white skirt scattered with puce leaves and green spots.

Note

James Neale (c. 1739/40-1814), an earthenware dealer in London since the 1760s, took over Humphrey Palmer's factory in High Street, Hanley in 1778, and from at least 1781 traded as James Neale & Co. Neale appointed a manager, Robert Wilson, and returned to London. The firm produced very well-modelled and painted figures, such as the set of Seasons to which this model belongs. They are much closer in appearance to porcelain figures than most Staffordshire lead-glazed earthenware figures.
