Autumn Bacchus

Maiolica figure of Autumn or Bacchus in off-white, holding a bunch of grapes, standing next to a column topped with bunches of grapes.
Off-white earthenware, press-moulded and tin-glazed off-white overall except for the base. The figure stands on a circular straight-sided base beside the lower part of a column topped with bunches of grapes. He wears a headband, a belt and a drape, and stands facing front, with his right leg advanced. His left elbow is bent and he has a bunch of grapes in his right hand which he holds across his body.
History note: Kerin, London, from whom purchased in May 1918 by H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
