Description

Tin-glazed earthenware figure of Bacchus painted in blue, green, yellow, yellowish-brown, dark reddish-brown, and manganese-purple.

Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in blue, green, yellow, yellowish-brown, dark reddish-brown, and manganese-purple. The figure stands on a circular mound base painted green with a yellowish-brown tree trunk at the back. It is convex underneath and has a ventilation hold under the tree stump. Bacchus stands in front of it with his left leg forward. His left arm is raised and he holds a bunch of grapes in his left hand. His right arm is extended a little to the side and he holds a yellow standing cup in that hand. His hair is yellow and on both sides of his head is decorated with grapes and leaves. He is nude apart from a manganese-purple cloak which is suspended from a reddish-brown strap over his right shoulder.

Although this figure and its companions bear the mark of Pieter Kocs who directed the Greek A Factory between 1701-22, they were probably made in the 19th century, or were made in the late 18th century and had the red mark applied to them overglaze in the 19th century
