Pomona
Production: Unidentified Delft factory
Tin-glazed earthenware figure of Pomona painted in blue, green, yellow, red, and manganese-purple
Pale buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue, green, yellow, red, and manganese-purple. The slender figure is supported on a circular mound base with a scrolled edge, coloured green with a few red strokes here and there on its top. Pomona stands on her right foot with her left relaxed behind it. Her left arm rests on a large yellow cornucopia filled with fruit. She holds a yellow fruit in her right hand which she holds in front of her at waist level. She has manganese-purple hair and wears an off the shoulder dress with a yellow top and manganese-purple lower part which is split on the right side to reveal her leg.

Although this figure and its three companions bear the mark of Pieter Kocs who directed the Greek A Factory between 1701-22, they were probably made in the 19th century. Rackham (1935) however, considered that they were Dutch and early 18th century, but mentioned that their authenticity had been questioned
Pomona was the Roman goddess of fruitful abundance, symbolized by her cornucopia full of fruit.
