Chinese Sage
Production: Unidentified Delft factory (Possibly)
Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in blue, green, yellow, red, a little manganese-purple, and black. The sage is supported on an octagonal base which rises up in the middle into a smaller octagon, and is concave underneath. He stands, with his head slightly lowered, and his left hand touching his breast. He is bearded and wears a manganese-black hat, black shoes, a long yellow floral-patterned robe, a blue bodice with red floral pattern, and a yellow and green coat with voluminous sleeves. A small flower-shaped manganese-purple purse or ornament is situated below his yellow belt. The back of his clothing is undecorated.The lowest part of the base had black sides and a yellow top, and the smaller, taller part is green with blue veining.

This figure is unmarked but is comparable to four larger Chinese standing figures on high octagonal bases and polychrome decoration in the Gemeentemuseum at The Hague OC(D) 32/238-1904. Two of which have a similar posture with left hand on breast. See Documentation.
