Seated Man holding a Wheatsheaf
Production: Two Ships Factory
Delftware figure of a seated man holding a sheaf of corn, painted in shades of green, yellow, manganese-purple and black
Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in bluish-green, yellowish-green, yellow, manganese-purple, a little red-brown, and black. The figure is supported on a bluish-green shallow circular base which is open under the figure, and now lacks a section at the back. The man is seated on a heap of straw or bales streaked in yellow and manganese. He has his right leg extended and the left bent at the knee. He leans to his left, and in both hands he grasps a sheaf of corn resting on his seat. He wears a tie wig, a yellow shirt, with a little red on the collar, a green jacket and breeches, both with yellow buttons, and black shoes with yellow buckles. The sheaf is yellow and manganese-purple with a red-brown string around it.

The Two Ships Factory (De Twee Scheepjes) operated between 1619 and 1794. The mark AP joined was used during the proprietorship of Anthonij Pennis, 1750-70, and of his widow, 1770-82.
