Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with birds and floral sprigs; pewter mounts
Buff earthenware tin-glazed, except for the underside of foot, and painted in blue. The jug has an ovoid body with shallow oblique ribs, a tall narrow neck, horizontaly reeded, and pinched at the top to form a lip. The handle in the form of a plait has at the top a pewter mount hinged to the cover, which has a finial of a depressed ball shape. The whole jug is scattered with small blue birds and floral sprigs. Around the top of the neck there is a criss-cross border. The plaited handle is outlined in broad blue strokes.

Jugs with this type of scattered floral sprigs, dots and birds were made in severl German cities. This example has been attributed to either Ansbach in Bavaria or Hanau in Hesse. Comparable jugs were also made in Nürnberg. See Documentation.
