Hard-paste porcelain 'Mandarin Palette' jug and cover, painted predominantly in iron-red and pink enamels with gilding, one of a pair. With a large pear shaped body and 'sparrow beak' spout, decorated on the front with a frieze of figures with only their upper halves depicted, on the elaborately painted terrace of a balconied house. Showing a lady to one side, holding a small shoe and gesturing to another lady holding a nest of red boxes; on the other side is a group of ladies cutting fabric on a table while a small boy peers over the edge. The scene is enclosed within a medallion of lappet outline edged in black and reserved against a ground of intricate floral scrollwork in gilding. A similarly shaped medallion is beneath the heavy scroll handle showing a songbird on a branch of flowering peony. A gilt key-fret border is round the rim.
The cover has a similar decoration of bird panels on a gilt scroll work ground.
