Description

Soft-paste porcelain moulded with decoration in relief, and painted underglaze in blue with Chinese landscapes.

Soft-paste porcelain moulded with decoration in relief, and painted underglaze in blue. The cup has deep curved sides and stands on a triangular footing. The sides are decorated in relief with three circular beaded frames, separated by vertical tapering lattice panels flanked by flowers. The frames enclose three different painted Chinese landscapes. Round the rim there is a 'key and cell' border, and round the footring, a single horizontal line. In the centre of the interior there is a floral spray.The circular saucer has shallow curved sides, and stands on a low footing. The sides are decorated en suite with the tea bowl, and in the centre it has a circular medallion containing a spray with two flowers.

History note: From the Merton Thoms Collection, sold Christie's 11th February 1910, part of Lot 182. Bought by Dr Glaisher for 30 gns.
