Red earthenware, partly coated with white slip and inlaid in white clay under yellow lead-glaze. Barrel-shaped with a spigot hole in the middle of one side of the uncoated central zone, flanked by the name, ‘JOHN LOFTEY’ and date, ‘AUGUST 18. 1811’, and triangular arrangements of stars, all inlaid in white clay.

Inlaid decoration is a typical characteristic of Sussex slipware. Possibly this barrel belonged to a John Lofty born about 1777 at Ticehurst in East Susex or another member of that family
