Description

Fritware coated in a white slip painted in black and blue under a clear glaze

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in a white slip on which decoration is outlined in black and coloured in blue (unless otherwise stated) under a clear glaze.
Shape: hemispherical bowl with a plain rim stands on a foot ring.
Interior: below the blue rim a concentric frieze of petals and tree trunks are painted. On the body a frieze of flower heads are depicted on a background of scrolling vegetation. Within a roundel defined by a concentric band of ‘S’ shapes, a floral spray sprouts from a mound alongside further scrolling vegetation. Slight defect in the glaze on the roundel.
Exterior: blue paint continues on the rim below which two friezes, similar to those on the interior body, are painted. On the lower body, a concentric blue band and on the foot ring two blue concentric lines are painted. Glaze runs over the surface unevenly onto the exterior foot ring and also covers the underside of the base.
