Description

Ao (blue/green) Bizen plate, thrown and turned, with sprigged cockerel added and rim indented. ‘Straw marks’ from the kiln packing are visible in grey on the blue/green background, due to the reduced firing. Original gold lacquer on the comb. A break occurred and was restored with gold lacquer on the upper side and red lacquer on the lower. Further gold decoration was added at this time. Further major breaks have been glued. Full restoration is required.

This plate is an example of Ao Bizen (blue/green); its colour is the result of reduction firing ( the blue/ green colour is the result of the reduction of red iron oxide in the clay ).
